How to Battle Business Inefficiency

Stop Making Excuses and Start Making Changes

How can my business become more efficient?

Whether you run a business or you work for someone who does, this question has probably crossed your mind. It’s a universal issue for everyone in a company because, simply, it impacts everyone. The processes by which your business operates on a daily basis affect everyone, from the brand-new entry level worker to the CEO.

Often, the problem is that analyzing your company’s processes and working toward making them more efficient is time-consuming. Hence, the idea of process improvement might roll around a lot in the back of everyone’s minds, but all too often that’s where it stays—growing dusty and never seeing the light of day.

However, there are serious consequences to ignoring inefficiencies in your organization. You can lose revenue by missing out on important opportunities. You can lose customers by not responding to their needs in a timely manner. And you can lose talented employees who are fed up with trying to get things done in an ineffective work environment. Don’t let your business fall prey to the scourge of inefficiency.

Here are some common excuses organizations make when it comes to dealing with their inefficient processes. If you find yourself saying any of these things, it’s time to make a change.

  1. We just don’t have time to deal with our processes right now. Just like with most things in life, there’s never a “right time” to deal with inefficiency. There will always be other things to do, important deals that need attention, projects with upcoming deadlines that must be met. The problem is, if you constantly run away from the important task of fixing your business processes because you have “more important” things to do, the issue will never get resolved. You’ll continue to deal with the same inefficiencies and never make progress toward a solution.
  2. We can’t afford to buy all the tools we’ll need to improve our processes. The truth is, you can’t afford not to! Your business’s inefficiencies will end up costing you much more in time, labor and mistakes in the long run than will fronting the cost of improvement.
  3. My co-workers will be reluctant to change. Most people don’t relish change. It’s scary, and readjusting to a new normal requires time and effort. However, doing the same old thing just because “that’s the way we’ve always done it” isn’t a good business model. Embracing the need to make positive changes is the first step to improving your organization’s efficiency.
  4. We can get by without changing anything. Sure, your business might survive without fixing its inefficient processes. But will you be competitive? Will your organization thrive in a day and age where customers expect extremely fast service, personal interaction, and brands that not only provide high quality products but that are also likable, relevant and engaged? If your processes are inefficient, the answer is probably “no.”

The reality is that in today’s competitive market, creating efficient business processes is the only way to remain relevant as an organization. If your organization is bogged down with outdated systems and archaic workflows, you are bound to fall behind the competition.
