Automating Pharmacy Ordering with Scanning Software

Pharmacy automation has several benefits, including enhanced patient safety and employee efficiency. PSI:Capture’s barcode reader can prevent human error by eliminating medication errors, while improving document workflow performance. With orders capable of arriving virtually instantly, pharmacists are freed to focus on more important aspects of their job, rather than wasting time tracking down lost orders. Key features utilized in a pharmacy scanning include:

  • Auto-import – PSI:Capture monitors hot folders and automatically processes scanned images as they arrive in any of the folders
  • Barcodes recognition – reads patient information from and of PSIGEN’s 26 types of supported barcodes, including Data Matrix and Code 39
  • Advanced Data Extraction (ADE) – scan and extract information from documents without any employee interaction
With PSI:Capture we were able to use existing scanning equipment to scan orders which arrive in less then ten seconds. The patient barcodes that are used at our facility contain only the patient encounter number. PSI:Capture actually reads the barcode and then looks up the patient name and renames the scan with the patient name, and urgency of “STAT” if scan is emergent, and the area of the hospital that the scan originated. The renamed scans are placed in a folder that serves as a queue for pharmacists to work out of and a second archive folder. We love organization and functionality that is afforded to us. What once was a manual process is now automated and efficient. – David Vasquez, Pharmacy Director, TexSAn Heart Hospital
